Professional Development Experience
Focusing On An “Externship” In Industry
Participants will investigate the workplace and develop methods for showing students the relationship between academic content and its context in business, industry, and the community. The investigation component includes a unique 18-hour professional "externship" at a business or industrial site. Built upon "teacher in the workplace" experience, practicing educators will learn the principles of contextual teaching and learning and how work skills apply to the Delaware academic standards. Some comments by educator externs in June 2009 :
Each participant will receive 25 professional development hours (20 if you have participated in a previous externship) as well as the opportunity to develop a relationship with members of the business community who may serve as advisors, guest speakers, mentors or resources for the participant’s program.
There Are Two Ways To Participate
2. Custom Externship: Instead of selecting a business from our standard list of participating businesses, call with a business selection of your own choosing or complete a registration form. Is there a business that you would like to visit and research? Call the business you would like to visit, and we will assist you to secure the site. This type of participation is a Custom Externship. Because these customized externships will take time to develop, the deadline for submitting suggested Custom Externship sites is March 15, 2010.
